Sony Group is in talks to acquire fellow Japanese firm Kadokawa, according to media reports, with animation and games properties the likely target.

Sony buying Kadokawa would have major implications for FromSoftware, but those ramifications would only be the tip of the iceberg.

Kadokawa Corporation has confirmed it has received a buyout offer from Sony, but insists it has yet to make a decision on whether to sell up.

But for Kadokawa themselves, they have shared a statement confirming that the potential deal between them and Sony has yet to be confirmed. Noting that they “received an initial letter of intent to acquire the Company’s shares,

Sony may acquire Kadokawa, giving them full control of the anime production system. If the deal goes through, Kadokawa's goal is to produce 40 anime titles per year by 2023.

After online rumors swirled around last week, Kadokawa has since confirmed that Sony is in fact interested in acquiring the Japanese media conglomerate known for its anime and manga publishing, as well as its majority 70% share in FromSoftware,
