The U.S. Supreme Court said it would not hear a case brought by parents in Wisconsin against their school district over its lack of a parental notification policy for students who change their gender.

Justice Alito said that the issue at the center of the case — so-called parents’ rights — is one of “great and growing national importance.”

The justices, acting in a case from Eau Claire, left in place an appellate ruling dismissing the parents’ lawsuit. Three justices, Samuel Alito, Brett Kavanaugh and Clarence Thomas, would have heard the case.
