In California, the biggest fire is the Gifford Fire in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties, more specifically along Highway 166 northeast of Santa Maria. The fire started Friday and spans 65,062 acres. The cause is under investigation, according to California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. It is only 5% contained.

The Dragon Bravo Fire near the Grand Canyon's North Rim lost containment, dropping to 13% due to dry, windy weather. The fire grew to 45,000 acres and advanced four miles north, threatening structures near the park's north entrance.

A wildfire burning since July 4 has closed the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park for the rest of the season.
