A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck southern Taiwan, leaving 27 people with minor injuries and some reported damage.

After a devastating earthquake in China's remote Tibet region killed at least 126 people and reduced houses and buildings to rubble, footage of motorists stopping on a shaking bridge was shared in social media posts falsely linking it to the powerful tremor.

The quake hit at 12:17 a.m. and was centered 38 kilometers (24 miles) southeast of Chiayi County Hall at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles), Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration said. The U.S. Geological Survey measured the earthquake at a less powerful magnitude 6.

Chipmaker TSMC said on Tuesday that all its sites were operating following an overnight 6.4 magnitude earthquake in southern Taiwan that was centred on a mountainous rural area and caused only minor damage and light injuries.

The earthquake sparked a fire at a printing factory in Chiayi, but the blaze was quickly extinguished with no injuries reported.
