Fire officials in California asked them to come help fight the fires burning down entire neighborhoods in the Los Angeles area. Captain Jeremy Sones says that based on what he knows about the conditions out there they knew it was a possibility.

High winds are typically associated with winter storms, hurricanes or severe thunderstorms. But on the morning of Jan. 17, 1982, 43 years ago, a fierce windstorm hammered the Front Range of Colorado with gusts you might associate with a mountain top or within the eyewall of a hurricane.

Fire crews and equipment from around the Front Range are now in California to help with the wildfires. The state also sent a specially designed plane.
