A Virginia hospital has been indicted on federal charges arising out of what prosecutors say was a "horrifying scheme" to profit from unnecessary hysterectomies and other surgeries performed by a doctor that left many patients sterile.

Chesapeake Regional Medical Center has been charged with healthcare fraud and conspiracy to defraud the U.S. as well as interference with government functions after a federal grand jury returned an indictment Wednesday.

Chesapeake Regional Healthcare billed about $18.5 million in questionable procedures performed by Javaid Perwaiz, who was convicted in 2020, prosecutors say.
