Canada’s premiers are urging Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to step up border security and defense spending to assuage US President-elect Donald Trump’s concerns, with the leader of the largest province calling the federal government “slow to react” and “stuck on its back foot.

U.S. president-elect Donald Trump announced plans to add a 25 per cent tariff to goods crossing into the country from Canada and Mexico. In response, Premier Doug Ford called the move insulting and said Prime Minister Trudeau has agreed to meet with him about the levy.

Trudeau is set to meet with the country’s premiers, after they asked for an urgent meeting on U.S.-Canada relations ahead of the incoming Trump administration.
