The U.S. is marking Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday. But in Alabama and Mississippi, it's also Robert E. Lee Day, in honor of the Confederate general.

Hundreds gathered in downtown Tuscaloosa to observe the birthday of the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

They were assembling cardboard boxes, sorting nonperishable items, and boxing up food that will go to families in need.
