NBC is broadcasting the perennial Christmas classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer on Friday night. As with every year, families will enjoy the wonderful stop-motion animation and classic songs from the Rankin-Bass production.

Friday marks 60 years since the release of the classic TV special "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer." Here's how to watch the family favorite.

Americans had their first meeting with a creature who, in his own words—though he was anything but self-aggrandizing—was a dear of a reindeer. Some of them may have already known of him, thanks to a 1939 poem by Robert May and a song from that same year by Johnny Marks—more on this apace—as well as a 1948 Max Fleischer cartoon,

In 1964, for NBC and General Electric, that meant a special based on the holiday story "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," which began life as a poem by Robert L. May in the 1930s and gained more popularity in the 1940s thanks to a song based on the poem by Johnny Marks.

The first NBC airing of “Rudolph” will happen on Friday, Dec. 6, at 8 p.m., the same date it premiered in 1964. It will air again on Dec. 11, at 8 p.m. For cable TV watchers, “Rudolph” will still air periodically on Freeform, including on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

"Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," the longest-running Christmas special in television history, will be shown on NBC for the first time in over 50 years this month. The return will include two presentations of an extended version of the beloved special.
