French President Emmanuel Macron announced Tuesday that the Mona Lisa will get its own dedicated room inside the Louvre museum, which he said will be renovated and expanded in a major overhaul that will take years to complete.

Leonardo da Vinci's famed "Mona Lisa" portrait is getting a new home at Paris' Louvre while the museum undergoes renovations.

French President Emmanuel Macron unveiled plans to renovate the Louvre as part of a so-called 'New Renaissance' project, days after the museum's director warned that the building was dilapidated.

A multi-year overhaul will see a new entrance built as well as a separate underground gallery for Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece in what Mr Macron called a "new renaissance".

The world's most visited museum is also overcrowded, antiquated and desperate for renovations that will start next year and include separate space and tickets for Mona Lisa.
