JMM executive president Hemant Soren Thursday took oath as the 14th chief minister of Jharkhand. Soren, 49, was administered the oath by Governor Santosh Gangwar at Morabadi Maidan in Ranchi. He was sworn in as chief minister of the mineral-rich state for the fourth time.

Among the INDI Alliance leaders Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal attended the swearing-in ceremony.

Soren, 49, held on to his Barhait seat by defeating Bharatiya Janata Party rival Gamliyal Hembrom by over 39,790 votes. This is the first time an incumbent government in Jharkhand has returned to power after a full five-year term. Soren's cabinet expansion will reportedly follow next week after a vote of confidence in the state Assembly.
